In recent years, during tax filing season, we have seen a rash of false returns filed using the victim's stolen information. Quite often, the victims are either elderly or of Puerto Rican birth/heritage (with the returns being sent out of the continental US). We are working with the IRS criminal division to stay ahead of the anticipated ID thefts. If you have been a victim of identity theft resulting in someone filing taxes using your stolen information, please try and keep copies of any paperwork that you may have or any reference numbers the IRS may have been given to ease agency co-ordination and report all to the Police Station. You can also reference the Federal Trade Commission website: FTC.GOV for further information on ID theft and how to get free, legitimate credit reports to find any other irregularities.
